Abraham Lincoln declared his participation in the general assembly of Illinois at the age of 23. In spite of the fact that he never received much formal education and lacked sufficient money, he always remained very popular amongst people belonging to his country.

Lincoln became the president of the United States in the year 1860. In the beginning of his political career, he joined several campaigns but after a short span of time he started practicing law. Once he became a successful lawyer, he thought of contesting the elections once again. He had become a part of the House of Representatives in the year 1846. His debating skills made him the most loved leader amongst people.

In the year 1858, he delivered an impressive speech claiming that if the house is divided then it cannot stand at all. His speech made such a mark among people that the Republican Party eventually gained extreme popularity. After winning over the elections for the post of president, he won hearts of people through his earnest efforts to change the society and eliminate all the ill practices that were prevailing. He is still remembered for the efforts he put in order to release all people who were victims of the slave practice. Despite the fact he never belonged to a well brought up environment and educational background, he made a significant mark in the history of American governance. The year 1860 too is considered to be one of the best time periods that the government of the US experienced.
