Aung San Suu Kyi Biography
Aung San Suu Kyi is an opposition politician as well as the former General Secretary working with the National League for Democracy in Burma. She was born on 19th June 1945 in the city of Yangon. During the general election held in 1990, she got around 59 percent national votes, and some people believed that this showed that she was the elected prime minister. But, she was detained in Myanmar under house arrest much before the elections. Out of the total time period of 20 years, she already has completed 14 years. |
She was brought up by her mother as she lost her father when she was really young. She completed her schooling from the Methodist English High School in Burma. She was extremely talented in terms of learning various different languages during her childhood and was involved a lot in such activities. She further studied at the St Hugh's College, Oxford and received her degree in Politics, Economy and Philosophy in the year 1969. After her graduation, she resided in New York City and started working in the US basically on the budget matters.
She received Sakharov Prize and also the Rafto Prize for freedom of thought in the year 1990. She further was awarded with the Nobel Prize for peace during the year 1991. She also received Jawaharlal Nehru Award given by the Indian Government in the field of International Understanding. She is the 3rd child, while the only daughter to Aung San, a person who is taken as the father of the modern day Burma.
