When he was just twenty-one years old, Gorbachev entered the Communist Party scene and started his education at the Moscow State University from where he graduated with a degree in law in the year 1955. During this time he met and married fellow philosophy student, Raisa Titorenko, in the year 1953.

During this time, the political and the economic scenario of the Soviet Union were in need for a major makeover.
