Mikhail Gor Gorbachev Biography
Mikhail Sergeevich Gorbachev, one of the most controversial politicians and presidents of Russia was born in March, 2, 1931 in Privolnoe, a place near Stavropol, in present day Russia. During his teenage years, he worked as a farm machinery driver at a machine-tractor station nearby. From here, he learnt about the problems the food industry and the political administration and also about the KBG (the secret police force of the Soviet) which was to help him in his career later. |
When he was just twenty-one years old, Gorbachev entered the Communist Party scene and started his education at the Moscow State University from where he graduated with a degree in law in the year 1955. During this time he met and married fellow philosophy student, Raisa Titorenko, in the year 1953.
During this time, the political and the economic scenario of the Soviet Union were in need for a major makeover. Thus after graduating, Gorbachev returned to Stavropol and began working as an organizer for a youth communist party called Komsomol. From here, his political career began to progress fast as he went on to be elected as Secretary of the Central Committee for Agriculture in the year 1978, and within two years, gaining full membership for the Politburo.
Mikhail Gorbachev became the General Secretary of the Communist Party on March 11, 1985. He brought about many economic reforms, which even though brought about a welcome change there, invited much criticism from the public.
However, by 1989, there came a difficult phase for Gorbachev as conflicts between the various ethnic groups of Soviet began to emerge. Also the agricultural and the industrial production began to decline bringing the country down to economic crisis. Two years hence, he was arrested for 3 days while on vacation at Crimea and the whole of Soviet Union fell apart.
