This private and prolific poet wrote almost 1,775 poems during her lifetime. Her work carried a lot of inner meaning and spoke volumes but she gave titles to only 24 of her writings. She hardly published ten of her poems during her lifetime though she sent her poems to her family members and friends.
She covered a variety of topics like friendship, relationship, nature, love, life and death which carried her own unique and revolutionary perspectives. During her last few years, when she lost her close relations like her parents and nephew, the reclusive and introverted writer chose to remain in full solitude and never left her room. In fact, she was known for her white clothing, her reserved nature and her reluctance to greet guests. She wrote a lot of works on death and the traumatic feeling associated with demise. In 1884, she suffered from an attack and two years later, she died on May 15, 1886.
Her younger sister, Lavinia, discovered her works later. These writings were edited by Thomas Wentworth Higginson and Mrs. Mabel Todd and her first collection of poems was released in the year 1990, four years after Emily’s demise.
Her works broke the conventional rules and established a new a literary standard with her unique pattern of word usage. And, this could be the reason why Emily Dickinson was not loved during her time. She may have been considered to outrageous for that period. Why is Emily Dickinson loved now? Well, her poems reflect a lot of intensity and passion towards relationship though she did not marry during her lifetime.
