What To Do After A Miscarriage ?

Having a miscarriage is one of the most devastating experiences a woman can have in her life. Not only does the miscarriage cause physical trauma, it also results in emotional problems. When a woman has a miscarriage, it is normal for the woman to cry at a drop of hat, suffer from depression, feel extremely tired, having sleeping problems, and also feel confused and uncertain. Usually, the physical aspects of a miscarriage heal faster than the emotional ones.

So, often the question is what should a woman do after a miscarriage. In order to help the woman cope with the emotional trauma of losing her baby, she needs a lot of support, physically and emotionally. The woman should also be encouraged to regain her physical health. Usually, many of the symptoms after a miscarriage occur due to low levels of progesterone in the body. Hence, progesterone levels should be tested by a doctor. If the levels are low, the doctor will prescribe medication to bring the levels back to normal.

The physical healing depends on when the miscarriage took place. If the miscarriage occurred during the early stages of pregnancy, the woman will heal faster compared to a miscarriage taking place in the later stage of the pregnancy. The woman should not try and get pregnant immediately after a miscarriage. She should wait for a minimum of 1 menstrual cycle before attempting another pregnancy. The woman must take adequate protection as the ovulation begins 14 days before the menstrual cycle.

The woman must keep a close lookout for infection. If a woman is having fever, it could be sign of an infection. Also, bleeding is normal after a miscarriage. Usually the bleeding will continue for a few days. However, if it does stop within 7 days of miscarriage, a woman should immediately visit her doctor. Also, while the woman is bleeding, she should not have sex, as it could result in an infection.
If the woman experiences pain in the abdomen or has a malodorous discharge, she should immediately consult her doctor. These are signs of infection.

Right after a miscarriage, a woman should concentrate on healing physically and emotionally. She should not think about having another child till this healing is complete. As mentioned previously, physical healing often is faster than emotional healing. The woman requires emotional support to overcome the emotional trauma of losing a child and hence, people around her should be supportive and be willing to lend an ear to her. If the woman finds it difficult to get over the loss of losing a baby, it is best that she joins a support group.

After a miscarriage, a woman should attempt to get pregnant only after the doctor gives her a green signal.
