Cause Of Sharp Chest Pain  

Invariably, when a person experiences sharp chest pain, the first thought is that he or she is getting a heart attack. However, this kind of pain is not always associated with a heart attack and can be brought on by several other causes. Nonetheless, if a person experiences sharp chest pain, he or she should visit a doctor at one.

Some of the causes of sharp chest pain include the following:

  • If the pain is extremely severe and tends to extend to the neck, jaw, back, shoulders and left arm, then in all probability, the person is experiencing a heart attack. In addition, there will be other symptoms like sweating, shortness of breath, nausea and maybe vomiting.
  • Angina is another cause for sharp shooting pain in the chest. This pain invariably last for a few minutes and occurs when the supply of blood to the heart is obstructed. It needs to be checked by a doctor.
  • Pericarditis, which is swelling of the sac covering the heart, causes this kind of pain. However, the person will also suffer from fever.
  • Coronary artery spasm also results in a sharp pain in the chest. This occurs when the arteries have a spasm and as a result the blood supply to the heart is blocked for a short duration.
  • Heartburn is one of the most common causes for non-cardiac related sharp pain in the chest. This pain will also be accompanied with a sour taste in the mouth and invariably comes on after a meal. The pain usually lasts for a few hours.
  • Another cause for sharp chest pain is a panic attack that causes the heart beats to accelerate. In this condition, a person will end up sweating a lot, suffering from shortness of breath and also hyperventilate.
  • Pleurisy, which refers to the swelling of the membrane of covering the lungs, is another reason for sharp pain in the chest. When this inflammation occurs, the person experiences severe pain in the chest that tends to worsen with inhalation or coughing.
  • Gallbladder problems can also result in chest pain. However, in this case, the pain starts in the stomach and then tends to radiate towards the chest. The pain is severe with gallbladder disease.

A person can also experience sharp pain in the chest due to other factors like injuring the ribs, a pinched nerve or sore muscles. However, if a person experiences sharp pain in the chest, the symptom should not be neglected. The person should immediately go to a doctor and have a thorough medical checkup done.
