What Does The Pulse Measure ?

In medical terminology, a person’s pulse is a symbol of the heart’s tangible arterial palpation which is measured by skilled fingertips. The pulse can be felt in which ever place that compresses arteries next to a bone like in areas of ankle joint (posterior tibial artery), elbow (brachial artery), knee (popliteal artery), wrist (radial artery) and neck (carotid artery).

Another way of measuring the pulse rate is by the measurement of the heart pace directly generally by employing a stethoscope.

Claudius Galen, a physiologist was probably the first one to explain the pulse. The physicians of Chinese medicine look for 6 various pulses in every wrist; each one corresponds to particular organs present in the body. They are skilled in pulse diagnosis which includes the examination of the degree, rhythm and regularity of pulses and might typify them as powerful, thread, suspended or slippery. The movement in the arterial walls is caused by the pressure waves created by cardiac systole. These are flexible and amenable. These characteristics form sufficient to produce a pressure wave which is palpable.

The pace of the heart can be both higher and lower than the rate of the pulse relying on physiological requirement. In such a scenario, audible reverberations at the heart peak, also known as auscultation determine the heart rate. Pulse deficit (disparity between pulsations at the margin and heart beats) is estimated by concurrent auscultation and radial artery palpation. For newborns, the standard pulse rate between 120-160 BMP (beats per minute), for kids between 1-12 months it falls to 80-140 BMP. Among grownups from 12 years of age to adults and elders the normal pulse rate goes down to 60-100 BMP.
