High Estrogen Causes

The two hormones, estrogen and progesterone are extremely important for the normal functioning of the female reproductive system. Estrogen is present in the female species in 3 forms, namely estradiol, estriol and estrone. Each of these types of estrogens has its distinct role in the body.

The development of the reproductive system amongst females during the years of adolescence is under the charge of estradiol. The second variant of the hormone, estriol is synthesized during pregnancy by the placenta. Finally, estrone is active during the menopausal phase of life.

Apart from being cardinal to the reproductive system, estrogen is known to be of significance to several other organs of the body; and also maintains the skin and hair in good condition. With regard to reproduction, this hormone ensures the occurrence of menstruation, aids in conception and carrying the fetus full term. In a normal menstrual cycle, estrogen and progesterone have specific roles to play, thereby regulating each others levels. The level of estrogen is high in a female’s body nearing her periods. These elevated levels are responsible for premenstrual symptoms experienced by most females prior to the commencement of the cycle. The high level of this hormone is countered by the release of progesterone at the time of ovulation. In absence of ovulation, progesterone is not produced; thereby resulting in the condition estrogen dominance characterized by the presence of excessive quantities of estrogen within the body. High levels of estrogen during pregnancy are considered normal. However, in absence of pregnancy the elevated levels of the hormone leads to night sweats, temperamental changes, tender and sore breasts, sleep disturbance and hot flashes. All these signs are part of the peri-menopausal symptoms that indicate an oncoming menopause. Since a woman is gradually moving towards the infertile phase of her life, therefore progesterone level decreases causing estrogen dominance or overload.

High level of estrogen could also be caused due to the presence of xenoestrogens that are certain man-made chemicals present within our surroundings. This condition is believed to result in severe health diosorders like breast cancer, infertility and auto-immune diseases. Some of the other reasons of high estrogen in the body include ovarian hyper-stimulation syndrome (OHSS) that could be a consequence of consuming fertility drugs to enhance the production of eggs by the ovaries and the presence of adrenocortical tumor that leads to an increase in the synthesis of estrogen, testosterone, cortisol and aldosterone. As per studies conducted by the Cleveland Clinic, excess estrogen could lead to irregularities in the menstrual cycle amongst women in their fertile phase and could cause menstruation in women in their menopausal phase.
