Dosage Of Progesterone Cream In Pregnancy

Progesterone is one of the hormones that is required for pregnancy. It helps in preparing the uterus for the implantation of the fertilized egg. It has been seen that when women take estrogen to balance the level of the hormone and progesterone is not taken along with it, then there is higher chance of getting cancer of the uterus.

It has been seen that when progesterone is taken orally, it does not get absorbed very well by the body. Hence, artificial progesterone, known as progestin, is given to women in order to balance the level of the hormone in the body. Usually, the progestin prescribed to women is medroxyprogesterone or norethindrone. However, it is usually recommended that women opt for natural progesterone to alleviate the side effects of artificial progesterone.

The natural progesterone is usually given in the form of cream. This cream has to be applied topically and it gets absorbed by the skin directly into the bloodstream. This progesterone gets absorbed by the subcutaneous fat and then enters the blood and from there it helps to regulate the levels of progesterone in the body.

As progesterone aids in preparing the uterus for implantation of the embryo, it is often recommended that women wanting to increase their chances of pregnancy or prevent miscarriage use progesterone cream. Hence, women want to know what is the dosage of progesterone cream in pregnancy.

Usually, the dosage of progesterone cream in pregnancy is 20 to 60 mg per day. As majority of miscarriages take place in the first trimester, it is advised that women use the progesterone cream through the trimester and gradually after they should taper the dosage of the cream. This has to be done slowly and should be supervised by the doctor.
