Adolescence In The Eighties
Adolescence in the eighties was characterized by spiky hair, dangling earrings and being either very masculine or very feminine. It was a strange time period which was completely different from the 1960s and 1970s. The teenagers during that time had an air of not being interested in anything other than a good life. |
The teenagers in the eighties were used to Ronald Reagan and the Cold War. They did not know anything different. Unlike what happened in the 1960s when the teenagers and young adults started demonstrating against Vietnam War, the teenagers in the eighties only could demonstrate against the threat of nuclear war. However, it was surreal feeling for them.
During the eighties, teenagers were expected to help out in the house with all the chores. It was the way parents inculcated a sense of responsibility in the children. There was definite division of labor among the genders. The boys were expected to do all the hard and so-called masculine tasks, while the adolescent girls were saddled with feminine tasks. Adolescence in the eighties was very traditional.
It was at home where the adolescents learned their values. They did not have vision of making the society a better place to live in, as they had read about all the failed attempts of the 1960s and 1970s. However, at the same time, adolescents were perceptive, pragmatic and also sensitive. Nonetheless, adolescents in the eighties were not waiting to enter the adult world. They were fascinated with increased consumerism, violence, drugs, crime and so on and so forth. This said adolescence in the eighties was no different from current day adolescence.
