A person who is standing near a smoker thinking that the smoker is ruining his life should think again. More than the smoker, the person inhaling the second had smoke are endangering themselves. In fact, he is being exposed to major health problems and risks just by being in the vicinity of the smoker. The person is putting himself at a high risk of contracting diseases like lung cancer, emphysema or chronic bronchitis. |
Most of the people are unaware that second hand smoke, or passive smoking as it is commonly called, is extremely dangerous. The smoke exhaled by a smoker contains a blend of nearly 4,000 chemical compounds. The toxic chemicals can cause a lot of damage to the body. When compared, it is seen that a person who inhales second hand smoke is at a higher risk of contracting lung cancer than the smoker himself.
Of course, if you are a smoker, you should not only know about the damage you are causing to your body but also to others around you. Although it is not necessary that all smokers will get lung cancer, emphysema, cardiovascular disease or any other health problems, the percent of smokers contracting various smoking-related diseases are very high. So also the general population if introduced to constant passive smoking.
So, whether you are a smoker or a non-smoker, you can be sure that cigarette smoke will affect you adversely if you are exposed to it. That is why so many legislations and laws are being passed in different countries banning smoking in public places like airports, pubs, theaters, bars, restaurants etc.
