The legend says that King Athamus from Boetia had a second wife called Ino. He although had children already, and she was very envious of them, especially of his son Phrixus. She plotted the crops to fail, and people of the country were led to starvation. In the mean time, she bribed a messenger that her husband had sent to the Oracle and asked him to say that Phrixus has to be sacrificed to save the country from starvation. However, the boy’s actual mother Nephele begged the king not to. However, the king decided to go ahead with the sacrifice. At the last moment Phrixus and his sister Helle were rescued by a golden fleeced ram.
This ram was dispatched by Zeus in response to Nephele’s prayers. The ram carried both the children away and crossed over a narrow stretch of water. Unfortunately Hell fell off the ram and died, but Phrixus was then safely carried away to Colchis. He thanked Zeus by sacrificing the ram, and then he presented the Golden Fleece to King Aetes.
