Vertical farming is the process of growing plants in a closed environment in high rise buildings. Currently several agro scientists believe that the time for vertical farming has come. Space and other natural resources are a big issue in the current day world. People cannot invest in huge portions of land for farming, while the world consumption rate is increasing tremendously. So the only solution seems to be in the form of vertical farming.

Some scientists believe that vertical farming done in a thirty storey building of one square block can cater to more than ten thousand people. That means Manhattan alone can serve a million people or more. However, vertical farming is not without its limitations.

The best advantage of vertical farming is that it does not use any pesticides or insecticides. There is no need to use more growth enhancement products as the plants will grow and produce naturally. These days several growth hormones are induced in plants for better output. However, when the crops are cultivated in a closed environment like vertical farming, the plants need to have a conducive environment at all times. They will produce the required output repeatedly. There is no limitation on the type of crops that can be cultivated in vertical farming.

However, to construct vertical farming solutions huge investments are required. Research from the fields of microbiology, chemistry and various other areas of science are a requisite for vertical farming. Chemistry plays an important role as it studies the chemical compositions of the plants and the waste management cycle in vertical farming industry. Farming and chemistry always had a deep impound relationship which will continue into vertical farming.
