The lily is known for its delicate beauty and that has made it one of the most popular of flowers. This flower has been long associated with innocence, purity and new beginnings. In Chinese, the word ‘lily’ stands for ‘forever in love’.
Lilies are broadly divided into two categories -- Oriental and Asiatic. Oriental lilies are late-summer bloomers and fragrant, while Asiatic lilies are hybrids, and usually bloom during early summer. Lilies are a sure choice when it comes to bouquets and flower arrangements, especially for traditional wedding décor.
Some of the different types of lilies are as follows:
American hybrid: These lilies are found in the U.S and Canada, and look like balloons. Their petals are joined at the back and they grow in well-drained soil.
Margaton hybrid: These lilies grow quite tall and are a popular garden variety. They are available in bright colors with spots.
Asiatic hybrid: These lilies bloom the earliest, and can be grown easily. They come in shades of yellow, pink, white, red, orange and plum.
Candium hybrid: These lilies are a rare breed, grown mostly by ardent lily lovers and not for commercial use.
Trumpet and hybrid: Trumpet lilies are huge, waxy and fragrant. They come in lovely shades of bright gold, apricot, yellow and glistening white.
Aurelian hybrid: Aurelian lilies are available in many different shapes and colors, and usually bloom during mid to late season.
Species lily: These are wild lilies which make great garden plants.
Goldband lily: These are large, white flowers that come with golden yellow markings, and are fragrant.
