Coconut is one of the most common fruits that are found in all tropical countries. It can be grown mainly in tropical areas. There are some cooler places in the world also where it is grown.

In places where it grows widely, people use it for several purposes. Like the flesh of the coconut fruit is used in cooking. The coconut water stored inside the fruit is used as a drink or drink mix. The outer shell is used for making handicrafts and many other purposes. Every part of the coconut has some or the other use. Every country has its own story of how the coconut was found.

Sailors from Portugal found it in India first, and they named it coconut because the brown hair of the fruit reminded them of a witch called Coco. According to the historians, the origins of the coconut can be traced back to Southeast Asia, somewhere in the Ganges Delta. However, some historians claim it first originated in South America.

What remains as a fact is that it an ancient fruit. Some of the fossil records found in New Zealand indicate that it grew there more than 15 million years ago. Older forests than these have been found in India in places like Karnataka, Rajasthan and Andhra Pradesh. In India, several traditions have a holy place for coconut is it is considered auspicious to break a coconut for festivals. Also, in the ancient texts, coconut was always found naturally, and nobody seemed to have cultivated the fruit.
