Pomegranate is a very delicious fruit that has several health benefits. Some of them include thinning of blood and preventing the blood cells from grouping together. It has several antioxidants that remove the free radicals from the body. It helps to prevent cholesterol and cancers. It also prevents arthrosclerosis.
Pomegranates are widely grown in California and the Middle East. They are harvested at the perfect time and the distinguishing sign for harvesting is when the fruit makes a metallic sound on being tapped. So, each and every pomegranate is tested before harvest. A mature fruit has a purple skin with a reddish tinge. It is big and has a diameter of around five inches.
Here are some of the parameters that will help you harvest the fruit at the right time.
The color of the pomegranate will tell you if it is ripe or not. When it is ripe it is crimson in color. It will be bright and deep red and will have no green color. Some o them will also have streaks of gold on them.
A pomegranate that ripe will have a slightly squarish in appearance. A round pomegranate is not ripe. The petals on the crown of the fruit will turn inside when it is mature. Furthermore, when a pomegranate ripens, it tends to be heavy. Remember, the heavier the fruit, the tastier and more scrumptious it will be.
The skin is a good parameter in identifying if the fruit is ripe. Typically, in a ripe pomegranate, the skin is quite hard. It becomes difficult to scratch it off. However, on applying a little bit of pressure, the outermost coating of the skin should come off. This coating is tender and when it comes off, it is an indication that the fruit is perfect for eating. The outermost skin becomes tender just before ripening. Avoid fruits that have cracked and/or split skin. Instead, look for fruits with complete and shiny skins.
Pomegranates can stay for up to 6 months when stored in a refrigerator. It is best to consume the fruit within a couple of days of plucking or buying it.
Pomegranate juice is also a good option, as it is replete with nutrients. However, if you are consuming pomegranate for health reasons, it is best to ask your physician, as it has the ability to interfere with certain medications.
Usually, it is very good for kids because it increases the red blood cells. It has several antioxidants that are good for health. It prevents ageing and keeps the skin in good condition.
