Pomegranate is a healthy and tasty fruit. It has several health benefits for us. However, separating the seeds from the pith is a bigger challenge. The pith inside the fruit is very bitter and can put off a person. The seeds have to be carefully extracted from the pith one by one.


When you are buying pomegranates look for ones that are plump and full. If the fruit is too old, it will shrink in size and the skin of the fruit will appear wrinkled. Avoid picking up such fruits. They should not have any cracks, splits and ideally pick up ones that are heavy.

Once the pomegranates are plucked from the tree they do not ripen anymore. However, they do crack and wither away. Ripe pomegranates are sold in farmers' markets and other such places. The fruit is best when it is fresh, even though they can stay for a long time in the refrigerator.

Cut through the skin of the fruit using a knife. Make several sections of it from top to bottom in a vertical manner. After making this sections cut of the crown of the fruit. When you remove the crown you will see the bright red seeds inside. Now pull away the sections that you have made on the fruit. They will easily come off, just like peeling the banana.

The seeds are divided by the pith. Break the fruit it into smaller pieces so that you can handle it more easily. Keep a bowl handy. Now carefully turn the smaller sections of the pith inside out. The seeds will easily pop out into the bowl. So you have to separate the seeds gently from the pith. After you take out all the seeds in this manner, gently rub the seeds in your pals so that even if the pith is left on the seeds they come out. Repeat the same process for every section.

A medium sized pomegranate can yield one whole cup of seeds. Some people recommend soak in the seeds in water. However, this can take away the color and the sweetness of the seeds. Rather cutting and peeling the fruit is a much better option. There are several ways in which you can have the seeds. You can add them to salads or you can also mix it with yoghurt and eat. To whichever dish you add, pomegranate lends its sweetness. It is a great substitute for sugar.
