Causes Of Ozone Depletion
Ozone is the layer of colourless gas formed by the ultravilot radiation on oxygen found in the upper atmosphere of the earth in the stratosphere that prevents the ultravilot radiations coming from the son to reach earth and thus prevents the life on earth. |
It was first foun out in 1970 that ozone layer was getting depleted due to industrial wastes, smoke from factories and vehicles, deforestation and various other man made pollutants. Since then many researches and studies have been carried out to find out causes and effects of ozone depletion and how to prevent our ozone layer to get depleted any further.Ozone depletion is caused when the free radicals such as atomic chlorine, nitric oxide, hydroxyl and bomine increases in the atmosphere. The biggest role is played by chlorofluorocarbons (CFC) which constitutes about 75 % to 80% of total depletion of stratosphere which is about 25- 30Kms above the earth. Due to ultravilot radiations in the stratosphere these compounds break down to release free chlorine atom which reacts with other molecules present in the ozone and reduces and depletes the ozone layer. CFCs last as long as 100 years on an average.
Once it was confirmed in 1987 many plans and agreements were made to phase out or prevent the use of chloroflourocarbons, and bring into use other chemicals which are not harmful to ozone. but still these are produces and are being added in the statosphere about 5 to 6 times faster then they can be naturally removed from the stratosphere.
