Alternative medicine is becoming more popular as many patients are not satisfied with the results of conventional medicine. However, conventional doctors and scientists are skeptical of alternative medicine as they believe that there is no scientific proof to show that alternative medicine actually works.
However, several disciplines in alternative medicines are ancient and have originated from ancient cultures. One thing is for sure that alternative medicine is definitely older that conventional medicine. For instance, Ayurveda, the ancient Indian practice of healing, is over 2,000 years old; and traditional Chinese medicine is nearly 5,000 years old.
Certain types of alternative medicines are said to work well in diseases like cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, asthma, sinusitis and certain types of gastrointestinal disorders. Some of these are diseases are such that conventional medicine has not been able to cure them and can only offer palliative care for them.
Lately some conventional medicine doctors have started appreciating the advantages of alternative medicine and respect the results that alternative medicine can give with certain diseases. In fact, many of these doctors are willing to combine conventional and alternative medicines so that the patient is treated holistically rather than symptomatically.
The basic difference between conventional and alternative medicine is the way health is perceived. In conventional medicine, a person is presumed healthy if he or she does not have any diseases or health-related conditions. On the other hand alternative medicine believes that a person can only be healthy if his physical, mental and social states are in balance and harmony.
