Menopause is a condition that every woman has to go through after their middle age. Doctors believe that menopause is not an incident but a process and for several women the process starts when they reach the age of 35. The body goes through several hormonal changes at the time of menopause.
Several of the symptoms like experiencing hot flashes, headaches that are recurring in nature, ageing, getting wrinkles on the skin and also experiencing dry skin are all associated with menopause. It is not menopause itself that causes so many symptoms, but it is the changing hormonal levels in the body.
A woman’s body needs a balanced level of progesterone and estrogen in the body and these hormones are produced naturally during menstruation. So during every cycle the production of these hormones follow a cycle where it spikes up and falls down rapidly. During menstruation the production of progesterone is almost nil, and at that time the levels of estrogen increases. However, after the menstruation period and when the new cycle begins, the levels of progesterone are restored. Menopause is a condition where the periods or menstrual cycle are absent for several months or even a year. At this time, the levels of progesterone are zero. The absence of progesterone is responsible for causing several of the symptoms.
Hormone replacement therapy is one of the kinds of treatment followed where it uses bioidentical progesterone. Progesterone cream is being considered as a very good alternative to taking pills. It is also a very convenient way of managing the progesterone levels in the body. However, one should be very careful while buying these progesterone based creams. They are available over the counter also but several of them are mineral oil based or contain extracts of progesterone from wild yams, for example. These may not suit everyone.
When you apply a progesterone based cream on the skin, the hormone is absorbed into the skin and then circulated in blood. When you take a medication, the tablet gets absorbed into the liver and nearly three-fourths of the tablet is excluded from getting into the blood stream. The body will only take how much it needs. Since the creams do not contain a very high percentage of the hormone, they tend to be more effective. However, using the right cream makes all the difference. It is always best to consult a doctor about which cream to use even if it has to be prescribed.
