Chronic Constipation And What To Do

Chronic constipation is a state which attacks a person repeatedly and makes it impossible for them to have a normal and smooth bowel movement. This condition can occur due to several health problems, like colon cancer, diabetes and hypothyroidism for example, as per Mayo Clinic. Constipations sometimes are connected with neurological disorders like Parkinson’s. The National Digestive Diseases Information Clearinghouse (NDDIC) conducted a research and found that over four million people in the United States suffer frequently from constipation.

The NDDIC suggests that constipation can be cured using various bulk forming laxatives. They are also called fiber supplements. These laxatives work by absorbing fluids into the large intestine or colon and make the stools to pass easily through it. There are several medications in this category like Bisacodyl, Lactulose, and Docusate which are popular. Some of the other types of laxatives are lubricants and fiber laxatives. Some medications can be taken whenever you have a constipation problem. But if it is chronic then it may not be advisable for regular usage.

As per Mayo Clinic, less than one percent of people suffering from chronic constipation actually go through surgery. The surgery is mainly performed to remove the hardened stools. A surgeon may perform a partial or total colostomy. In this surgery, the small intestine is directly connected to the rectum, bypassing the colon or large intestine. In a normal person the food passes from small intestine to the large intestine. After the surgery, several patients have reported of more than 4 bowel movements in a day.

If constipation is a chronic problem for you, it is recommended that you make some important lifestyle changes. They are helpful in the treatment of the condition. This may include adapting to new habits and making dietary alterations. You will be required to eat mostly vegetarian food and they include cabbage, Brussels sprouts, carrots, fresh fruits and many more such ingredients. For a normal person, the daily recommended fiber consumption is 24g. For a constipated person, it as high as 35g. Fiber will loosen up the stools and make it easy to pass through the colon. It is also recommended that you drink 10 glasses of water every day. That will amount to at least 2 liters of water every day.

Most of the problems with bowel movements are solved with consumption of water. However, for a chronic patient they may have to do all of the above recommendations like taking laxatives, drinking adequate water and also eating fiber-rich food.
