How Long Does It Take To Cure Gonorrhea Symptoms ?

How long it takes to cure gonorrhea symptoms depends on how long a person has had the infection and how much the infection has spread. Usually, if the infection is diagnosed in the initial stages, then taking the proper treatment helps to cure gonorrhea symptoms in around 2 days. (See Reference 1) However, the person would still have to continue taking the medication for as long as directed by the doctor. Otherwise, this will lead to developing into antibiotic resistant strain. In case there are complications, the cure of gonorrhea symptoms will be longer than 2 days.

The good news is that the symptoms of gonorrhea can be alleviated completely with the help of antibiotics. However, both partners should be given treatment; otherwise the person getting treated can again catch the infection from the untreated partner. (See Reference 1) Usually, when a person has gonorrhea, there is a high chance that he or she will also be having Chlamydia. Hence, doctors end up giving treatment for both the infections. In addition, the person may be prescribed painkillers to help with the pain brought on by the infection. (See Reference 1)

The treatment for gonorrhea symptoms begins with laboratory analysis of the sample taken from the suspected site of infection. Once the lab confirms the presence of gonorrhea, the doctor will either give antibiotics in the form of pills or an injection. The injection is a single-dose one that is given intramuscularly. Usually, penicillin is not used to treat gonorrhea as the US has reported many penicillin-resistant strains of the bacterium causing the infection. (See Reference 1)

The gonorrhea symptoms will abate in 2 days after commencing the treated provided there are no complications. However, the course of the treatment has to continue for as long as advised by the doctor. Thereafter, the doctor will conduct another examination to ensure that the infection has gone away completely.

During the course of the treatment, the person has to abstain from sexual intercourse. This is to avoid spreading the infection to others or getting some other STD. (See Reference 1). However, if after 2 days of starting the treatment, the symptoms do not disappear or more symptoms are noticed, the person should immediately visit the doctor for further check up. (See Reference 1)

Remember, gonorrhea can cause complications that could lead to male as well as female infertility. It can also spread to other organs, such as the brain and heart and cause meningitis or infection of the heart valves. Untreated gonorrhea can also be fatal. Hence, the moment a person notices the symptoms of gonorrhea, a visit to a doctor for treatment is a must. The treatment will help cure gonorrhea symptoms in 2 days and prevent complications from occurring.
