It is transmitted via a bacterium whose shape is like coffee bean. This bacterium enters and spreads into body via openings like the rectum, mouth and vagina. The bacterium infects any part of the body, especially the cervix of women and urethra of men. This infection spreads to the reproductive tract and then to the bloodstream. It may also lead to meningitis, arthritis, sterility and sometimes death.
Gonorrhea can be treated and cured. Both partners should be treated the moment one of them is diagnosed with the disease. They should also educate themselves on ways to avoid the infected in the future.
To get a confirmed diagnosis of the disease, a sample for testing is taken from the area which is infected, like the urethra, vagina, and rectum. If you are infected with gonorrhea, you will be prescribed with antibiotics and also analgesics to give relief from pain. The antibiotics are in the form of a pill and also one dose injection.
Use the antibiotics which are prescribed by the doctor. Although your symptoms vanish, keep taking the medication until the doctor asks you to stop. Also, ask your sexual partners to consult a doctor.
Avoid having sex until doctor tells you and your sexual partner that it is safe. If you still have symptoms after the treatment, re-visit your doctor.
The duration to cure gonorrhea actually depends on how long the person has had the infection. If the infection has not spread to the cervix or the urethra, then the infection will clear up within 2 days of starting the treatment. If the infection has spread, then it will take several days or weeks for gonorrhea to cure.
