What Does Ringworm Look Like On A Human ?

Ringworm is also referred to as serpigo or tinea. This is the root cause of skin infections which appears in different forms and different parts of the human body. The ringworm causes an inflammation in the skin, which has an appearance of a ring-shaped worm embedded underneath the skin. It can cause embarrassment due to the itchy sensation, especially if it occurs on a visible part of the body.

In simple terms, ringworm causes skin rash which is raised from the skin and appears in a tinge of reddish-brown coloration. This appearance is not the only one. Sometimes the outer boundary appears scaly while the central portion is lighter.

The infection can occur in different parts like the scalp, feet, toes, fingernails, toenails or even the groin. Infection on the scalp begins in the form of a pimple which will spread and become a patch. The hair in this region will become brittle and break easily leaving a bald patch.  The infection in this region will take approximately 10 to 14 days to manifest after initial contact.

On the feet, the skin appears scaly and peels easily. This is also referred to as athlete’s foot. When the nails of the fingers or toes get infected, they appear discolored, become brittle and thick. The infection in the area around the groin is also referred to as ‘jock itch’. The infection becomes apparent with the associated symptoms between 4 to 10 days after initial contact.

The infection spreads through direct or indirect contact. Direct contact would mean by physical touch with an individual already infected. Indirect contact would refer to contact with surfaces which an infected person has used or been in touch with. Common objects which can spread the infection include stuffed toy, mats in gym, hats, bedding, clothing or accessories used for hair.

Another medium that spreads this fungus is pets. The infection in the pets becomes apparent when it has progressed. The fur often conceals the inflammations which will not be visible to the naked eyes.

Maintenance of good hygiene is foremost in keeping this infection at bay. Precautions like washing hands after grooming the pet, wearing proper foot-wear while stepping out of the house, wearing shower shoes while bathing in public facilities should be practiced.
One should waste no time in consulting the doctor on detecting scaly reddish colored patches on the skin in any part of the body.

First hand treatment includes application of an effective anti-fungal cream which contains miconazol, terbinafine, clotrimazol or ketoconazol.
