Yellow Fever Symptoms

Certain countries in South America and sub-Saharan regions still suffer from outbreaks of yellow fever. Although steps were taken in the past to eradicate the breeding grounds of the Aedes aegypti mosquito, certain transmission cycles are still prevalent, and as a result the disease is still present. Therefore, if you are traveling to the aforementioned regions, it is imperative that you know the yellow fever symptoms. Many times, in the initial stages, the disease is mistaken for malaria, dengue or hepatitis.

Here are the yellow fever symptoms:

As mentioned earlier, due to the symptoms in the early stages, it is quite difficult to diagnose the disease. Often doctors can misinterpret the symptoms for typhoid fever, hepatitis, dengue or malaria. However, the main yellow fever symptoms include chills, pain in the muscles, headaches, backache, appetite loss and nausea. These symptoms manifest themselves in the first phase of the disease which is also referred to as the acute phase. This phase starts after an incubation period of three to four days, and around three to six days after the infection. However, the symptoms in majority of the patients disappear once this phase ends; but around fifteen percent of the infected people enter into the second phase, which is also known as toxic phase.

The second phase begins within twenty-fours of the symptoms of the first phase subsiding. It affects different systems of the body and also leads to jaundice. In this phase there may be hemorrhage from the eyes, mouth, stomach and nose. The blood is ejected out of the body via feces and vomit. Nearly fifty percent of the people who enter the second phase succumb to the disease.
