A root canal treatment invariably takes more than one sitting to complete. Before a permanent filling and crown is put, the dentist first uses a temporary filling. So, care must be taken not just after a root canal, but also in between your dental appointments.
Root canal treatment is done using anesthesia. Hence, after your session with the dentist is over, you will have no sensation in your lips and tongue. During this time, it is best to avoid chewing anything, as you will find it difficult. Furthermore, do not worry if you notice a part of your temporary filling wearing off or chipping away. It is quite normal. On the other hand, if the filling comes off completely, make sure that you visit your dentist immediately to get it replaced. Otherwise, the cleaned tooth hollow will collect food and cause bacteria proliferation.
After a root canal, you will have some discomfort in the tooth. At times, you may experience the pain only while chewing. The pain and inflammation of the gum after a root canal can be combated with a salt water rinse. Dissolve one teaspoon salt in a glass of warm water and swish it in your mouth. Spit out the salt water and do not eat or drink anything for some time.
Here are some more tips on what to do after a root canal:
- Do not eat any sticky food for some time. This is especially true for chewing gum, as it can dislodge the crown. Wait for a few days before you indulge in your passion for sticky food.
- Do chew on hard food, like candy and ice. It may cause your crown to chip, especially if it is made from porcelain.
- A few days after the root canal, chew food from the side which is alright. This will ensure that you do not experience pain or discomfort while chewing.
- Make sure that you maintain dental hygiene under all circumstances. Brush your teeth twice a day and also floss them regularly.
- If you have an uneven bite after the permanent crown is affixed get in touch with your dentist to rectify it.
- Pain usually takes a few days to subside. During that period take the painkillers as advised by the doctor. If the pain does not subside and you notice bleeding and inflammation, visit your dentist immediately. It could be that the root canal has a bacterial infection or the treatment was unsuccessful. Your dentist would be able to inform you as to what has happened and what measures can be taken.
