Breastfeeding is a important time for both the mother and her baby, in terms of health. The food that the mother takes in at this time is crucial as they will not only affect her health but also her baby’s health, either positively or negatively, through the milk he takes in.
If the mother is taking in foods which are generally not advised to any lactating mother, then it can produce bad effects on the infant. He may have to suffer intestinal pains, colic, gas and abdominal bloating. The baby may also experience some allergic reactions or irritation due to the things being passed to him through his mother’s milk, resulted from the incorrect food consumption by her.
Cow’s milk along with other milk products is also known to cause adverse effects in an infant. Consuming eggs, citrus fruits, chocolates, caffeine and wheat products are also not advised to the mothers who are still breastfeeding their babies. Cucumbers and garlic are found to cause gas in child if the mother consumes too much of them right after delivery. Also, food dyes used in various foods these days also cause harm to the babies. Thus, the mother’s should check their food properly before consuming them. The fruits and vegetables that are brought from the markets should be washed properly and peeled if needed before taking in.
Fish from freshwater should also be avoided during the breastfeeding phase by a mother as the fish may be contaminated from that water. Also, any poultry products may have harmful chemicals in them. So, it is better to avoid them also during the months of breastfeeding. It is necessary for a mother to understand her baby’s needs and note the things he or she is reacting to. Then she can adjust her diet accordingly.
