Women are easily prone to yeast infections. However, these days, men are equally affected. Yeast infection, or Candidiasis, is caused when Candida albicans grows in large numbers on the body surface. Under normal conditions, this yeast is not harmful and does not cause any health disorders. It is suppressed by Lactobacillus acidophilus, a good bacterium found in the body.
Consuming antibiotics for a prolonged period can result in an imbalance in the microorganism culture allowing yeasts to grow in large numbers and decreasing the population of Lactobacillus acidophilus. Drinking alcohol and/or hormonal changes in the body can also cause Candidiasis.
It generally affects moist areas of the body. Genital regions, mouths and armpits are particularly susceptible. Yeasts feed and grow in a sugary medium. Therefore, if you consume large quantities of sugary foodstuffs, you are directly providing an ideal base for yeast to grow and multiply in your body.
Symptoms of yeast infestations are:
- Itching
- Burning sensation
- Formation of blisters (sometimes filled with pus)
- Redness and pain
Candidiasis can cause several problems in the digestive and reproductive tract. Generally, this disease is more or less harmless except for the discomfort and itching experienced by the affected individual. In some cases, it may enter the reproductive system and interfere with fertility, making it a cause of concern. When found in large numbers in the digestive system, there are chances of a person complaining about abdominal pain. While over-the-counter medicines are very useful in treating the problem, the time taken for the infestation to be completely cured varies from one person to the other.
