During days of extreme cold, the rays of the sun seem like heaven. Surprisingly there are some people who end up with severe health problems when exposed to these rays. Sun tanning is a terminology that is frequently heard of. In the west, people particularly like basking in the sun to give their skin a brownish appearance referred to as a tan.
However, there are many who end up with sun poisoning owing to the adverse effects of the ultra violet radiation. The real cause of the problem is not known authentically but there seems to be a genetic factor that makes such people more sensitive to sunlight. Strangely, the sensitivity level tends to deteriorate with repetitive exposures but strikes very harshly after a long period of non exposure. This sensitivity results in symptoms such as rashes, inflammation, itching and pain; that is evident on the neck, arms, chest and thighs. The swelling activates the nerve endings, thereby transporting signals of discomfort or pain to the brain. At times, blistering may also occur which makes the condition even more painful, aggravating the probability of infection in case of them bursting.
Certain measures that seem to offer respite to the sufferer include administration of painkillers, anti-inflammatory medicines, topical corticosteroid medications, cold compresses or even over-the-counter creams. However, the good news is that the symptoms normally subside within a week’s time. Those susceptible to sun poisoning are in general advised to either protect their skin from the direct rays of the sun by using sunscreens and wearing the right kind of clothes or better still restrict their exposure to sunlight.
