Cause Of Stalking

Stalking is considered to be a serious problem. It involves following, threatening, calling, sending letters or emails, or sending unwanted gifts to a person. It can also involve spying on the person, trying to strike a conversation with the person or keeping very close tabs on the person.

Stalking is deliberate and it ends up threatening or annoying the person being stalked.

Anyone can be stalked. A woman can be stalked by her ex-lover or ex-spouse after ending a relationship, a child can be stalked by a sex offender, a teenager can be stalked by an obsessed schoolmate, or a person can be stalked by a complete stranger. It is not necessary that a person has to know his or her stalker personally.

Here are some of the common causes of stalking:

  • A stalker starts believing that the victim is in love with him or her. This phenomenon is known as erotomania. The stalker thinks that the person being stalked likes the attempts to make contact and feels that both, the stalker and the victim, are meant to be together. This is a form of psychosis.
  • After a relationship ends, an ex-partner may feel that he or she has the right to pursue, get back and dominate their ex-partner and this leading to stalking of the ex-partner or -spouse.
  • Stalking invokes a feeling of power within the stalker. It makes him or her feel potent and strong knowing that they have the ability to intimidate or frighten a person. And thus, the trend of stalking continues instead of abating after a certain period of time.
  • If a person bears malice against another one, he or she may resort to stalking just to create distress in the victim's life.
  • Obsession plays a very important role in stalking. Most stalkers are completely obsessed by their victims and want to keep a close check and tab on them. The only way they can do is through stalking.
