How To Prevent Stalking Harassment ?

While for some people stalking is a mere annoyance, for others is so frightening that they fear for their lives. However, it depends on the victim, law enforcement and society to end all forms of stalking. Remember, stalking is considered harassment and one should not keep quiet about it.

How to Prevent Stalking:

Here are some strategies that can be employed to end stalking. Some of these steps can also be used to prevent stalking.

  • Do not be afraid to get a court order of protection. Many women are killed each year after being stalked by their ex-husbands. Therefore, take stalking seriously.
  • If you receive a threatening call from the stalker, make sure you inform the police about it.
  • Although it can be disgusting and frightening to receive threats, save all the records and evidence. They may come handy in the future when you want to get a court order against the stalker.
  • Make sure you have emergency phone numbers handy and easily accessible. This means having phone numbers of the police, a close friend's or domestic violence shelter.
  • If you are being stalked, do not take home security lightly. Get the services of home security either from the police or security companies.
  • Always keep a packed suitcase in case you have to make a quick getaway to escape the stalker.
  • Always ensure that you have enough money in your purse and the gas is always full in your car.
  • Do not give your home address and telephone number to strangers or people you hardly know. It is better to give the address and phone number of your workplace.
  • When throwing away letters and personal papers, make sure you tear them completely because stalkers tend to dig in trash to recover personal information about their victims.
  • Make sure you install dead bolts on your doors so that no one can break open the door and enter. In case you misplace the keys, replace the locks on all doors immediately.
  • Do not set a daily route for traveling. Rather change your route often.
  • Always stay in well-lit areas and when getting into your car, get someone to escort you.
  • If necessary, get an unlisted telephone number so that only people who are close to you have it and the stalker cannot call and distress you.
  • Just because a stalker calls you, do not change your telephone number because the stalker may view it as a challenge. It will be better to get an answering machine.
  • Take self-defense classes so that you can protect yourself if the need arises.
