Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands are an extension of the United States and are actually US territories. You do not require a passport just to cross the border.

However, you do need to carry some type of identification with you if you are above the age of 18. If you are planning to cross over to the British Virgin Islands, then you will need to carry the passport and also get a visa.

When it comes to Cuba, almost all US citizens should understand by now that it is illegal to travel to Cuba if you are a US citizen according to federal laws. Though several travelers are being caught after a secret trip to Cuba, people are still doing it. So, Cuba cannot even be included in the list.

Any other Caribbean destination usually would require a passport as a valid form of identification and moreover if you intend to come back into the United States, then you would need a US passport. Some of the Caribbean islands also ask for a return ticket as proof of return journey.

While you are traveling on a Caribbean cruise it is best to check with the tour operator about all the destinations and the required visas to enter the port. Other than the above mentioned places, all other places require US citizens to show their passports and have valid visas as well. However, even if they could leave the country without a passport, they would still need one to re-enter the country and that is why it is important to have the passport as a proof of identity.
