|Chinese Medicine And Liver
Liver in the human body plays a vital function. It is a reddish brown gland situated in the upper part of the abdomen on the right side. It is the largest gland in the human body and secretes bile juice which is stored in a sac like structure called gall bladder. The bile which is being secreted by liver plays an important function in the digestion of fats. The liver depends on enormous amount of blood to function normally.
According to Chinese medicine, the flow of energy in terms of blood is controlled by the liver. Any malfunctioning or obstruction in the flow of this energy, called Qi, causes the liver to disrupt its functions. This disruption in the function of liver leads to many other diseases.
The abundant amount of blood supply to liver helps in cooling down the liver which in Chinese medicine is said to be an organ of fire and heat. An insufficient blood supply to liver heats it up more than it is required causing distress to other organs. This kind of liver malfunctioning in Chinese system of medicine is termed as liver Qi stagnation. Liver Qi stagnation paves the way for other diseases like insomnia, irritable bowel syndrome, arthritis, headaches, acid refluxes and stress.
The Chinese believe in five elements of nature that control the human body. As part of Chinese medical system, the liver belongs to the element of wood. To treat the liver disorders in Chinese medical system, at first the emotional state of the body is treated because the body and the mind are not separate identities of human body.
