The liver is the organ that is responsible for cleansing the blood from the toxins and waste. If the liver does not work properly, this function is impaired and causes a lot of health issues in the person. The best way to ensure that the liver works optimally is to avoid eating foods that damage the liver.

So, what are the foods that damage the liver? Here is a list of those foods:

  • Alcohol is broken down in the liver, but alcohol is harmful to the cells of the liver, leading to cirrhosis and fibrosis. When alcohol is broken down, the result fats are stored in the liver. This can lead to a harmful condition known as fatty liver disease. Even consuming a single glass of beer or wine can result in fatty liver disease.
  • Though herbal remedies are good for people, there are some that adversely affect the body. Herbs like black cohosh, barberry, Chinese ginseng, chaparral, creosote bush, false pennyroyal, mistletoe, and sassasfras are harmful for the liver. There are many more herbs that can damage the liver.
  • If you eat fatty food, it does not result in fatty liver per se. When fat develops in the liver, the working of the liver gets impaired. This leads to insulin resistance and causes diabetes. Also, there is a risk of turning obese, and this, in turn, could lead to several other ailments like cardiovascular disease.
  • When you consume food rich in saturated fats, it increases the level of fats and cholesterol in the blood. This can result in fatty liver disease and also heart ailments.
  • Foods rich in calories can result in non alcoholic fatty liver disease. If a person consumes too many calories, it leads to weight gain. This, in turn, leads to high levels of cholesterol, diabetes, heart ailments, and/or insulin resistance.
  • If you consume too much salt, it results in elevated blood pressure. This, in turn, leads to fatty liver disease.

Other foods that damage the liver include artificial sweeteners, fried potatoes, and monosodium glutamate which is used in processed foods like snacks, and dehydrated food and soups.
