What Causes Liver Damage ?  

When the liver gets damaged, usually a person will not notice any symptoms till the damage becomes severe. There are many causes for liver damage, and some of them are lifestyle habits, taking certain kinds of medications or dietary supplements and suffering from chronic viral infections.

According to the American Liver Foundation, the most common causes of liver damage are as follows:
Alcohol: In the US, the main cause for liver damage is drinking large amounts of alcohol for a long period of time. This can not only cause damage to the liver, it can also lead to failure of the liver or cancer of the liver.

Toxic Mushroom: There are several species of mushrooms that are inedible because they are toxic. People who pick these mushrooms in the wild often mistake them for the edible varieties. These mushrooms are known as amanita or deathcap mushrooms and contain a toxic compound that immediately causes damage to the liver. Eating these mushrooms can also be fatal at times.

Herbs: There are some herbs that can lead to damage of the liver. The herbs that should be avoided or consumed in limited quantities to avert damage of the liver include kava, cascara, chaparral and ma-huang. These herbs can result in liver damage, especially if they are eaten along with certain kinds of medications.

Medication: There are some medications that can cause damage to the liver, and these include aspirin, ibuprofen, certain kinds of antibiotics and drugs used to lower blood cholesterol levels. These medications should be taken only under the supervision of a doctor.

Hormones: Taking synthetic hormones like anabolic steroids or those present in oral contraceptives can inflame the liver and lead to liver damage.

Chemicals: Certain chemicals that are poisonous in nature like trichloroethylene, paraquat and tetrachloride can damage the liver when the person is exposed to them.

Viral hepatitis: Have chronic viral hepatitis can lead to liver damage over the course of the disease.
