The small intestine is the main site for the digestion of food and assimilation of nutrients. The last segment of the small intestine, referred to as the ileum is characterized by the presence of finger like projections called villi. These villi in turn contain microvilli. It is the presence of both these structures, villi and microvilli that enables the small intestine to carry out its functions effectively. These projections increase the surface area of absorption, thereby enhancing the assimilation of the nutrients.
