Hypothyroidism or under- active thyroid glands and hyperthyroidism or overactive thyroid gland are common thyroid problems faced by both men and women. Thyroid problems have few distinct symptoms and, thus, not easy to detect. But, with a thyroid hormone level blood test the diagnosis becomes easier. If left untreated, the disorder can turn severe thus an early diagnosis and early treatment is required.
Major symptoms of hypothyroidism in men are physical and mental fatigue, weight gain, changes in behavior, mood swings, muscle pain, frequent constipation or depression and thinning or warming of skin. Apart form these some vague symptoms can also be noticed. The main cause of hypothyroidism in men is an autoimmune disorder called Hashimoto thyroiditis; radiation therapy; thyroid surgery; and taking certain kinds of medicines.
Common symptoms of hyperthyroidism in men are insomnia, increase irritation, muscular weakness, loose motions, swollen neck, diarrhea, nervousness or increased perspiration. The common causes of hyperthyroidism are grave’s disease, over functioning thyroid nodules or thyroiditis.
Having seen the symptoms and causes let us now look at the treatment. Hypothyroidism is generally treated with use of synthetic forms of thyroid hormones like levothyroxine to balance the hormone level. These are inexpensive drugs with no side effects. The treatment is generally life long. Before taking the medication consult you doctor if you are taking any other medication like iron or calcium supplements.
To treat hyperthyroidism convention medicines are used with the aim of lowering the hormone production. The treatment is however dependent on the patients age and physical condition. Treatment includes surgery, anti thyroid medicines, radioactive iodine and beta blockers.
