The lymphatic system is spread all over the body, and comprises of lymph nodes, lymph vessels and the lymph. The system helps to filter and capture foreign particles, cellular debris as well as pathogens that enter the body. This responsibility is given to the lymph nodes. Hence, when the immune system is working hard, there are chances of suffering from swollen lymph nodes, especially in the neck region.
Some of the causes for swollen lymph nodes in the neck are listed below:
One of the most common causes for having swollen lymph nodes in the neck is the common cold. In addition, people may complain of swollen glands when they suffer from tonsillitis, strep throat, sore throat or tuberculosis. Even diseases like toxoplasmosis, rubella and peri-tonsillar abscess can result in the swelling of lymph nodes located in the neck region. At times, the neck lymph nodes can also swell up when a person is suffering from inflamed epiglottis, which is a small flap located at the base of the tongue. (See Reference 1)
People suffering from syphilis, which is a sexually transmitted disease, can have swelling of the lymph nodes located in the neck region. Many a times, it has been seen that those suffering HIV/AIDS have similar complains. Other causes for swollen lymph nodes in the neck include sinusitis, ear infection, acne, gum disease, impetigo, skin infections and dental infections. (See Reference 1)
Even some kinds of cancer can result in the lymph nodes located in the neck region to swell up. The cancers that cause swelling of the lymph nodes include Hodgkin's lymphoma, cancer of the larynx, oral cancer, non-Hodgkin lymphoma and leukemia. (See Reference 1)Taking into consideration that several causes for swollen lymph nodes in the neck exist, it is best to seek medical advice if you happen to notice tenderness around the chin, upper part of the neck or around the years. Also, if the skin looks inflamed and red, and the person has upper respiratory infection, it is always better to consult a doctor as it may be a sign of cancer of the tonsils. (See Reference 1)
