When it comes to maintaining our health, one of the most neglected aspects is oral hygiene. In fact, doctors say that oral hygiene can be an indicator of digestive system, immune system and cardiovascular system health. And, many people use mouthwash as part of their oral hygiene.
While some say that mouthwash is good, there are others who disagree and say that it can cause more harm than good. So, what are the pros and cons of mouthwash?
Pros of Mouthwash:
On the whole mouthwash is very effective in getting rid of certain bacteria from the mouth that lead to bad breath. In addition, by using mouthwash everyday and twice a day, you can temporarily mask bad breath. Some mouthwashes contain fluoride and using these mouthwashes, you can coat the teeth with fluoride and thereby preventing tooth decay and making teeth stronger.
Generally, using mouthwash can lead to fresher smelling breath and the mouth feels cleaner. Most people use mouthwash after brushing their teeth but you can use it any time. Mouthwash also helps to wash away debris of food that may be stuck and that is why some people use it after each meal even if they do not brush or floss their teeth each time.
Cons of Mouthwash:
There are some mouthwashes that contain extremely high levels of alcohol. Using these mouthwashes regularly can cause burning sensation in the cheeks, gums and teeth because the alcohol tends to burn the delicate mucus membrane in the mouth.
In addition, alcohol-based mouthwashes are desiccants. They dry up the mouth and this can increase the risk of tooth decay. There are some concerns that these mouthwashes also contribute to increased risk of oral cancer but there is no scientific evidence to back this claim as yet.
Using mouthwash too often can create an imbalance in the natural bacteria present in the mouth and this can lead to overgrowth of bacterial content and a condition known as black hairy tongue.
Some over-the-counter mouthwashes can cause teeth staining or discoloration and mouth ulcers.
