A study on exercise and cardiovascular health was carried out by the Erasmus M.C. University Medical Center of Rotterdam in the Netherlands. The study looked at the effects of different levels of physical activity on life expectancy of people with cardiovascular disease and aged 50 years and older.
The study on exercise and cardiovascular health was conducted in 2005 on 5,209 people living in Framingham, Massachusetts with the data of the last 46 years, which was gotten from the Framingham Heart Study.
To get results, the researchers calculated the effects of exercise and adjusted the effects for age, sex, smoking and cardiovascular disease. The study concluded that people who exercised maintained better cardiovascular health and this meant that their life expectancy increased. However, the increase in life expectancy was proportionate to the amount of exercise. For instance, people who did moderate to high exercise ended up adding 1.3 to 3.7 years to their total life expectancy which was more than what they would have lived with their cardiovascular disease. This was for men. While women who did exercise and had cardiovascular disease ended up adding 1.5 to 3.5 years to their life expectancy.
This study on exercise and cardiovascular health clearly demonstrates the importance of exercising. Exercising not only increased life expectancy in people with cardiovascular disease but it also helped them to reduce the effects of the disease. This study basically just reinforces what doctors have been saying already that moderate levels of exercise can help to reduce the effects of cardiovascular disease and maintain cardiovascular health.
