Only about 25 percent women and 50 percent men experience the symptoms of Chlamydia.
In women, the symptoms of Chlamydia include vaginal discharge, burning sensation during urination, and irregular periods. If untreated, it may spread to the upper genital tract and affect the other organs such as the uterus, fallopian tubes and ovaries. If the fallopian tubes are infected by Chlamydia, then the woman may get fever and nauseating feeling and, additionally, also experience pain in the lower abdomen, bleeding between periods, severe back pain, and bleeding during sexual intercourse. If untreated, it can result in complications such as pelvic inflammatory disease, or Cystitis, and infection of the bladder. It can also lead to infertility in women.
In men, the symptoms of Chlamydia include a watery or milky discharge from the penis and pain or burning sensation during urination. Men may also experience pain or swelling of the testicles. If untreated it can lead to further complications such as scarring of the urethra, Protatitis (inflammation of the prostate gland), and epdidymitis (inflammation of the epididymis).
Both men and women may suffer from an inflammation of the rectum and urethra. They may also develop conjunctivitis and soreness in the throat or mouth.
