Prostate Cancer -- Causes, Symptoms And Treatment
Prostate is a walnut-sized gland found exclusively in the male human body. Prostate gland is located beneath the urethra and in front of the rectum. This gland is associated with the male reproductive system and secretes a thick seminal fluid essential for providing nourishment to sperms. Growth and function of the prostate gland are highly influenced by testosterone. Altered cell growth inside prostate gland is associated with occurrence of prostate cancer.
Prostate cancer is more prevalent among middle-aged and older men. Risk factors of prostate cancer include age, race, nationality, familial history and diet. Occurrence of prostate cancer is more common in African-American men while it occurs less in Asians, Hispanics and Latinos. North Americans and Europeans are more prone to this cancer type. People consuming high amount of red meat or high-fat dairy products and fewer amounts of fruits and vegetables tend to suffer from prostate cancer.
Prostate cancer can be better treated if diagnosed early. Some important early warning signs of prostate cancer include frequent urination during nights, occurrence of pain and burning sensation during urination, reduced and interrupted urine flow, difficulty in having an erection, painful ejaculation, difficulty in holding back urine, presence of blood in urine or semen and frequent pain or stiffness in the lower back, hips and upper thighs.
Preliminary diagnosis of prostate cancer involves physical examination of the patient, urine examination to check the presence of blood and blood test to measure the PSA (prostate specific antigen) level. However, patients need to undergo other diagnostic procedures like transrectal ultrasound, cystoscopy and transrectal biopsy in order to confirm the presence of prostate cancer. Prostate cancers are graded from 2 to 10 based on the Gleason score. Higher the score, the more advanced the cancer. Treatment of prostate cancer involves surgery, radiation therapy, hormone therapy or a combination therapy.
