Who Founded The National Breast Cancer Awareness Month ?

One of the best techniques towards prevention of any medical condition or enhancing its prospects of successful treatment is propaganda of the specific disease encompassing domains of its symptoms, cause, treatment and prognosis.

The National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM) also called Breast Cancer Awareness Month (BCAM) is a mode of increasing awareness on the issue of breast cancer. This health campaign is planned on a yearly basis in the month of October by various charitable institutions dealing in breast cancer. This drive imparts knowledge related to the disease in terms of its cause, prevention and treatment; aids in generating funds for further study on the subject and is a source of immense support to the patients of breast cancer. Above all, such endeavors work as reminders for women to get regular screenings conducted in the form of mammography so that the disease can be identified at the earliest.

It was 1985 that a drug manufacturing company called AstraZeneca founded the National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Although the drive was initiated by this company producing vital cancer combating drugs such as Arimidex and Tamoxifen, with time many more companies have joined hands in this social cause. As part of the activities planned for NBCAM ‘pink day’ is often celebrated, wherein those promoting the awareness are seen in pink attire and accessories. The symbol of pink ribbons was for the first time associated with breast cancer in the year 1991 by the Susan G. Komen Foundation that distributed pink ribbons to the survivors of breast cancer during the New York City race. Thereafter, Evelyn Lauder founded The Breast Cancer Research Foundation in 1993, announcing the Pink Ribbon as its symbol. The money generated during this awareness month is utilized towards various concerns encompassing breast cancer.
