Early Stages Of Lip Cancer

Early Stages Of Lip Cancer

Lip cancer is a form of oral cancer originating in the tissues of lips or tongue. Most common lip cancer is squamous cell carcinoma, which begins in squamous cells, the thin, flat cells that line the lip and mouth.

Risk factors for development of lip cancer include environmental factors such as exposure to suns ultra-violet rays, behavioral factors such as smoking and alcohol and congenital factors such as fair complexion and gender.

Lip cancer has been divided into five stages depending on the progression of the disease. These five stages are:

Stage 0 :( carcinoma in situ)

In this stage the lip cancer is present in the layers of the cells that line up the lip and oral cavity. These cells may become tumor and spread into nearby tissues.

Stage I:

The cancer has formed and the tumor is less than 2 centimeters in size (about one inch) and has not extended to other parts of the body including lymph nodes.

Stage II:

In this stage the tumor would have grown to a size of 2 centimeters, but it is less than 4 centimeters and has not spread to lymph nodes.

Stage III:

In this stage either of the following may be true: The tumor is more than 4 centimeters in size. The tumor is of any size and it would have spread to single lymph node on the same side of the neck as the cancer. The lymph node that contain tumor measures no more than 3 centimeters.

Stage IV:

This stage is divided into three sub stages.
a) The tumor has spread to neighboring tissues around the lip and oral cavity.
b) The tumor may be of any size and has spread to one or more lymph nodes that are bigger than 6 centimeters.
c) It has spread to muscles or bones in the oral cavity or to the base of the skull. Cancer may have spread to one or more lymph nodes on one or both sides of the neck. The tumor may be of any size and has spread to other parts of the body including lymph nodes.

If the patient is diagnosed in the early stages of lip cancer, the prognosis is good. There is complete chance of recovery. Stages 0 and I can be considered as early stages of lip cancer.
