Blood Loss With C Section

C Section or the cesarean section surgery is performed when a pregnant woman is not able to give a normal birth, which is a vaginal birth. C section according to modern medicine is considered to be the safest procedure for delivering the baby and also a life saving method. However, C section is also a major surgery and all major surgeries have complications.

Heavy bleeding ending up in severe blood loss is one of the major complications which can occur during the procedure. Blood loss is feared during the C section because the uterus is a large part which has enormous amounts of blood supply.

As soon as the doctors make an incision into the uterus there an actually be a lot of bleeding. Normally doctors do prevent excessive bleeding by putting stitches and using a monitor however in rare cases women do end up bleeding a lot and reaching a level where they might need a blood transfusion or in the worst case a hysterectomy to save their lives.

So as prevention measure women who undergo C section are required to have iron pills everyday because the blood loss is twice as compared to vaginal delivery. Also many women develop uterine infections after the C section is performed and antibiotics are prescribed for their treatment. The chances of blood loss in C section does exist however the loss of life due to blood loss is rare because the doctors can follow other measures to save the patients life. It is a disadvantage that the patient has to face because of the blood loss as compared to women who have a normal child birth.
