There are some indirect tools available to measure the amount of blood loss during surgery. A pulse oximeter is used to measure the blood loss in the patient’s body and it works by measuring the amount of oxygen lost by the body. It measures the oxygen saturation levels through blood samples taken directly.

It is attached to the monitor in the surgery room where the doctors and the staff can see the oxygenation level by looking at the monitor. These devices are also capable of displaying the heart rate at the same time. However, this device also has many limitations and it is not accurate enough to guarantee the safety of the patient while a surgery is being performed.

The pulse oximeter can only measure the amount of oxygenation that is taking place in the body but not the rate at which the oxygen is being used by the patient. To determine this rate, the level of carbon dioxide should also be measured.

However, the basic use of the pulse oximeter is that it monitors the heart rate and the oxygen levels in the body and at any time the surgeon feels that it is dropping in levels the patient can be provided supplemental oxygen. Since there are no better devices that can give the amount of blood loss directly and accurately the pulse, the pulse oximeter is considered as emergency equipment that are useful during surgeries. It is a good way to judge the needs of the body in terms of oxygen and even though it is an indirect way of monitoring blood loss it is still useful.
