What triggers an asthmatic attack? Dust mites, molds, exercise, smoke, changes in weather triggers asthma. Keep a daily diary and record foods consumed and activities undertaken. One can narrow down the search and point out what causes it. Asthma prevention is looking out for signals that may bring about an attack. They may be a cough, a runny nose, or any trigger exposure. The asthmatic person himself can undertake prevention measures.

Carpets, heavy curtains should be taken out, because they collect dust and bring about allergies. Mattresses and pillows should be covered with plastic airtight covers. Pets should be kept away from the room in which the person sleeps.

Indoor humidity should be controlled as dust mites and mold thrive in it. Tobacco smoke is taboo. Take measures to control cockroaches in the house. Sprays with heavy odors are to be removed. If breastfeeding by mothers is done for 6 months, the child’s immune system is strengthened. This would give resistance to respiratory infections. Strong emotions should be avoided.

Asthma has some side effects which one has to put up with. Sleep disturbances are inevitable. Daytime fatigue increases. This could adversely affect one’s personal life.

Thus the symptoms can be reduced if one stays away from the trigger points. It would then be possible for asthmatics to lead a normal life and to remain in shape and exercise as well.
