Wheezing is a common result of a respiratory ailment. It could relate to something quite simple like a cough or mild pneumonia that causes congestion in the lungs, or in the worst case it could be a preliminary symptom of lung cancer.
Wheezing is generally considered synonymous with asthma which is incorrect, as it could be associated with any number of respiratory conditions.
Wheezing is a whistling sound when exhaling caused because of an obstruction in the lungs. The obstruction could be a narrowing of the air vessels caused by tightening of the surrounding muscles as in asthma, or by constriction because of swelling of the lining, or a coating of an excess production of mucus. Sometimes the obstruction can be a foreign body lodged in the air passages.
There are a number of home remedies that can ease the discomfort of wheezing and in some cases cure it. Some simple recipes for home remedies are as follows:
- Fried foods are believed to be an aggravant and are best avoided.
- Foods rich in antioxidants and magnesium-rich foods are recommended as they relax the airways.
- Steam inhale twice a day with carom seeds.
- Drink milk with crushed garlic.
- Take a teaspoon of honey with half a teaspoon of cinnamon the first thing in the morning.
- Take a teaspoon of fresh ginger juice with honey twice a day.
- Drink a glass of a decoction made by boiling a teaspoon of cumin seeds, half a teaspoon of fresh ginger and a pinch of nutmeg in water. The decoction or tea must be drunk hot.
