According to the World Health Organization, around 3.5 billion people have one or the other type of parasitic infection; and not all infected people live in developing countries. Many people with parasitic infections also live in developed countries, and some of these infections are highly contagious.

There are many different types of parasites and therefore, parasitic infection symptoms vary. It is not possible to list general parasitic infection symptoms but broad symptoms can be mentioned. However, just because you have one or two symptoms, it is not necessary that you have a parasitic infection. Although, it would be worth your while to get yourself checked.

Parasitic Infection Symptoms:

Here are the most symptoms experienced by people who have parasites.

  • Constipation is seen in many people who have certain types of worm living in their gastrointestinal tract. Constipation occurs due to the shape and size of the worm. Having high concentration of worms can cause blockage of the bile duct and intestinal tract leading to constipation.
  • Diarrhea is primarily caused by protozoa infections. The diarrhea occurs due to the parasite creating sodium and chloride loss and this leads to watery stools.
  • Gas and bloated sensation occurs due to the inflammation caused in the upper part of the small intestine. This symptom can worsen when an infected person eats foods like beans and raw fruits and vegetables, which are hard to digest.
  • Irritable bowel syndrome occurs when the parasites irritate the cell wall of the intestine. This results in malabsorption of nutrients leading to bulky stools that contain too much fat.
  • Anemia occurs when the parasite attaches itself to the mucosa of the intestine and starts bleeding the body of vital nutrients. Sometimes high concentration of these parasites can lead to severe iron deficiency or pernicious anemia.
  • Skin allergic reactions like hives, rash or eczema can occur when intestinal worms are present. Some people can dermatitis due to protozoan infections
  • Teeth grinding or bruxism is seen in people who have parasitic infection. The grinding occurs during sleep is seen more commonly in children. It is believed to be in response to internal irritant of foreign nature.
  • Chronic fatigue is also experienced by people and this symptom manifests itself through flu-like complaints, memory and concentration problems and constant tiredness.
  • Immune dysfunction occurs due to parasitic infection and a person's immune system stops functioning normally leaving the person open to bacterial and viral infections.
