Scabies On Back And Neck

Scabies On Back And Neck

Scabies is an itchy rash on the skin caused due to an allergic reaction to a mite. The female mite burrows under the skin making small tunnels where she lays eggs and leaves her feces.

Anyone can get scabies if they come in contact with an infected person. Usually you get scabies in areas that are rough and creased; primarily the knees, elbows, knuckles, groin and on the webs between the fingers. However, a person who is bedridden can get scabies on the back and neck if the mites are present on the person's bed linen.

Scabies, whether on the back and neck or any other part of the body, causes severe itching and skin irritation. A person will notice that the itching gets worse after a bath or when he is snuggled up in bed.

Since scabies can be contracted by skin contact, it is very common in nursing homes and residential homes. In the elderly residents, the scabies is found on the neck and back since they are usually lying in bed. That is why many homes for the elderly constantly have checks to ensure that there is not scabies present among the residents. Even caretakers and nurses in these homes are susceptible to scabies as they take care of the residents.

If scabies is present on the back and neck, you should immediately visit a doctor. You can use some Calamine lotion to relieve the itching. The doctor will recommend a medicated cream or lotion like Lyclear Dermal Cream. Make sure that you get all the areas on your back. If you cannot reach a certain spot, ask someone to rub the medicated cream or lotion. Before applying the cream or lotion, make sure your skin is dry and do not take a bath immediately before or after the medicine.
